I was just sitting at home watching the SciFi channel, and this really horrible commercial came on about an alien who is dropped off at an orphanage and treated badly and bullied by the other kids, etc. It sounds silly when you describe it, but it was really horrible! It wasn’t funny at all. It didn’t make me want to watch the scifi channel! It actually upset me and made me sad thinking about real children and animals that are left homeless and abused and alone in the world. I quickly changed the channel to put something light and funny on to cheer myself up. I don’t know who the hell thought this was a good marketing idea. It’s depressing, it’s sad, and it definitely doesn’t make me want to watch the scifi channel. sorry guys, REALLY bad marketing! and yes, I know it's complete fiction, but it's too close to home, it's too real. Why don't you show dogs being put down? or maybe hungry homesless people wandering the streets? Try to come up with a commercial that doesn't make people feel bad.

I know how you feel Gaspar. The first time that I watched the commercial for adopt Sci Fi I found it incredibly upsetting. But it is an honest depiction of how we might react to otherworld visitors - we treat each other like that. My niece was watching it with me and wondered how they could leave such a small orphan behind - probably had to go through a learning curve.
However Im not sure that it could be described as bad marketing. I think the marketeers have in some way achieved the effect that they wanted. Even though some of us may not be drawn to Sci Fi it is an advertisement that we remember. And because we have commented on it and other people will see this then perhaps this is the desired effect.
Watching dogs being put down and hungry homeless people is very close to home and unfortunately people dont like to see that either.
